Construction for East County’s First Up-Scale Hotel Could Start in January

Construction on a Courtyard by Marriott hotel in downtown El Cajon could begin in January after necessary property sales were completed, city officials announced Thursday.

The 120-room project on the northeast corner of Magnolia and Rea avenues will bring the East County its first upscale name-brand hotel. El Cajon’s top-rated lodging house, according to, is the Best Western Continental Inn on Mollison Avenue.

A second major hotel could be built by Hilton near Parkway Plaza, according to the city.

The Courtyard will include a swimming pool, outdoor dining, business center, two meeting rooms and a pair of commercial spaces that will be available for lease. City officials said landing the hotel, and possibly the Hilton, will be a huge economic win and bring new jobs and business opportunities.

Existing buildings on the lot will be razed, but area police and firefighters got first choice in order to use the structures for about one week of tactical training.

The Marriott is scheduled to open for business late next year.
